Two men. Thirty years.
John Puller's mother, Jackie, vanished thirty years ago from Fort Monroe, Virginia, when Puller was just a boy. Paul Rogers has been in prison for ten years. But twenty years before that, he was at Fort Monroe. One night three decades ago, Puller's and Rogers' worlds collided with devastating results, and the truth has been buried ever since.
Until now.
Military investigators, armed with a letter from a friend of Jackie's, arrive in the hospital room of Puller's father-a legendary three-star now sinking into dementia-and reveal that Puller Sr. has been accused of murdering his wife.
Aided by his brother Robert Puller, an Air Force major, and Veronica Knox, who works for a shadowy U.S. intelligence organization, Puller begins a journey that will take him into his own past, to find the truth about his mother.
Paul Rogers' time is running out. With the clock ticking, he begins his own journey, one that will take him across the country to the place where all his troubles began: a mysterious building on the grounds of Fort Monroe. There, thirty years ago, the man Rogers had once been vanished too, and was replaced with a monster. And now the monster wants revenge. And the only person standing in his way is John Puller.

Bestseller Baldacci makes the implausible plausible in his riveting fourth thriller featuring U.S. Army criminal investigator John Puller (after 2014’s The Escape). Thirty years after Puller’s mother, Jackie, disappeared from Virginia’s Fort Monroe, a neighbor at the time, now terminally ill, has written the authorities to make a devastating claim. Although Puller’s soldier father was believed to have been abroad on the fateful night, new evidence has emerged that he was in the vicinity when Jackie vanished, and that coupled with the dying neighbor’s belated accusations that he murdered her has led to a reopening of the dormant case. Puller, naturally, ignores requests to stay out of the investigation and finds that some logical avenues of inquiry weren’t pursued at the time. Meanwhile, brutal Paul Rogers, who has been discharged from prison, embarks on a quest of his own, whose purposes are initially artfully concealed. Baldacci maintains tension throughout and imbues his characters with enough humanity to make readers care what happens to them. Agent: Aaron Priest, Aaron M. Priest Literary Agency. -

Baldacci's fans won't be disappointed with this thriller's layers of intrigue. Narrators Kyf Brewer and Orlagh Cassidy provide excellent dialogue and action that move the story at a rapid pace. John Puller investigates his mother's disappearance 30 years ago because his father, once was a high-ranking officer, is suddenly accused of murdering her. In spite of orders to drop the investigation, John pursues the case and is warned to trust no one, not even his brother. When beautiful intelligence operative Veronica Knox appears to help him, he's suspicious. The two narrators create realistic dialogue, and Cassidy's feminine voice contrasts well with Brewer's. While Brewer's vocal scratchiness can be a bit distracting, his excellent pacing keeps the listener engaged. L.M.A. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine -
